Kulukak

River Float Trip

The Kulukak River float starts at Kulukak Lake, 40 miles northwest of Dillingham. The river is about 40 miles long and is good for a 5 day float. The float ends where the river flows into Kulukak Bay. This is a very good river to float if you are interested in Dolly and Coho fishing. This river has very light use, as there is only one drop off camp on the lower river. The Dolly fishing is good anytime of the year.

Coho Fishing

The Coho’s show up in the lower river August 15 with peak fishing the last week of August. The Kulukak River gets an annual average escapement of 12,500 Coho a year. The Coho hold in the bottom third of the river for long periods of time. The Kulukak also gets 26,000 chums, 2,000 kings, and 25,000 reds on an annual average return.

Depending on how much fishing and hiking you want to do, you can float the Upper River and fish for Dolly’s for 2 or 3 days; then, you can spend 2 or 3 days fishing Coho on the bottom end of the river. An outboard motor is recommended so that you can work the Coho schools on the bottom end.
